Nicolas Cage‘s ex, Christina Fulton, is suing the actor and their son, Weston Cage, over an alleged April assault by the latter, which she says left her with “catastrophic” physical, emotional and financial injuries.

Fulton, an ex-girlfriend of Nicolas Cage and mother of Weston Cage, is suing the actor father-son pair for negligence and Weston Cage for assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, according to a civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles this week. In July, the 34-year-old actor and mixed martial artist was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, after allegedly punching and causing injury to two victims. Fulton confirmed she was one of the victims shortly after.

In the lawsuit, Fulton, 57, describes Weston Cage, full name Weston Coppola Cage, as a “300-pound professional fighter” who has a history of “violent assaults, substance abuse, and mental instability,” which she says Nicolas Cage, 61, was aware of but failed to address.

Fulton alleges in the filing that Nicolas Cage took “charge” of Weston by giving him financial support, bailing him out of jail “multiple times” and “drinking alcohol with Weston, despite knowing his substance abuse issues and history of violent outbursts.”

Nicolas Cage, Weston Cage respond to Christina Fulton’s lawsuit: ‘Not surprising’

In a statement to USA TODAY Thursday, a lawyer for Weston Cage said the suit was expected.

“Ms. Fulton’s decision to file a lawsuit against her own son is not surprising given her past history of litigation against family members,” his lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, wrote. “It appears to be nothing short of a money grab and call for attention. Ms. Fulton correctly advised the responding LAPD officers that her son was in the midst of a mental health crisis at the time of this incident.  We will deal with this appropriately, and in a courtroom.”

“The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous,” a rep for Nicolas Cage added in a separate statement. “Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Fulton and her lawyer for comment.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office reviewed details of an alleged April 28 incident involving Weston Cage and opted to charge him with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon months later. The actor and mixed martial artist was released on a $150,000 bond.

According to the LAPD, “(Weston) Cage punched two victims multiple times, causing injury” at a downtown Los Angeles apartment complex. In a statement shared with USA TODAY at the time, Fulton confirmed she was one of the victims in the April 28 incident. Her statement also included a photo of what appeared to be severe, disfiguring injuries to her face.

Fulton said at the time she was contacted by Weston Cage’s friends urging her to help him, but when she arrived to console him, “he was already in the midst of a manic rage.”

Christina Fulton attends the OK! Magazine and BritWeek Oscars party at The London West Hollywood on Feb. 25, 2011, in West Hollywood, California.

“Within minutes, I was brutally assaulted and sustained serious injuries. Despite my desperate pleas to the responding Police officers to detain him for a mental health evaluation, the Police officers refused my request and neglected my urgent need for my medical attention,” she added. “As a mother, I am deeply saddened and concerned about Weston’s on-going mental health crisis. It is imperative that he receives the help he desperately needs.”

Fulton says Weston Cage attacked her in his building’s parking lot, elevator and lobby, which would go on to cause a brain concussion, neck and throat injuries, “disfiguring eye injury,” dental and abdominal trauma, and PTSD, requiring surgeries and extensive care, according to the lawsuit.

She claims the assault also “devastated” her modeling and acting career, forcing her to miss filming on a Netflix show and jeopardizing her business ventures, including an unspecified “multimillion-dollar opportunity.”

Fulton is seeking a jury trial and unspecified financial damages.
